The Thai government has approved the measures and guidelines for visa issuance to promote tourism and stimulate the country’s economy as proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). The goal is to make every trip to Thailand more convenient and easier. The implementation of various measures will be divided into three phases. We have summarized them briefly as follows.
- The list of countries/territories eligible for visa exemption will be expanded from 57 countries to 93 countries. These visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days for tourism, business, and short-term work. This will take effect from June 2024.
- Granting Visa on Arrival (VOA) as a unilateral measure by Thailand will take effect from June 2024.
- Introducing a new visa type, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), for foreigners with skills and remote workers (digital nomads) who wish to reside in Thailand to work and travel simultaneously. This will take effect in June 2024.
- Enhancing privileges for international students pursuing undergraduate degrees or higher, who are granted a Non-Immigrant Visa code ED. This measure aims to facilitate international students currently studying or about to graduate in Thailand, to attract skilled and potential individuals into the country’s labor market. This will take effect in June 2024.
- Adjusting the criteria for long-stay visa issuance for elderly individuals who wish to spend their retirement years in Thailand. This will commence in September 2024.
- Launching electronic visa (e-Visa) services to cover all Thai embassies, consulates-general, and trade offices worldwide by December 2024. Additionally, enhancing the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to streamline the screening process for foreign nationals, integrated with immigration checkpoints, which will be fully implemented by June 2025.
