Entry into ‘Europe’ Requires EES Registration Prior to Immigration Clearance

November 6, 2025 | 8 views

From 12 October 2025 onwards, all 29 countries within the Schengen Area will implement a new registration system for travellers from third countries entering through immigration checkpoints, such as airports. This system, designated the Entry/Exit System (EES), must be completed prior to standard passport stamping procedures at immigration control. The system applies to short-stay travellers entering the Schengen Area (stays not exceeding 90 days within any 180-day period). All Thai nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays are required to comply with the EES registration requirements.

The European Union will commence gradual implementation of this system at selected border checkpoints. The EES will record passport information, facial images, and fingerprints of travellers immediately upon arrival at immigration checkpoints, such as airports, before proceeding with standard passport control procedures. Full implementation across all border checkpoints is anticipated by 12 April 2026.

1. EES Registration Requirements and Exemptions

This system applies to short-stay travellers (90 days within any 180-day period), including Thai nationals holding European tourist visas or those travelling for official business or temporary conference attendance.

*Thai nationals exempted from this system include: holders of European Union member state citizenship, or Thai nationals holding long-term visas or residence permits in European Union countries, such as marriage visas, work visas, or student visas. 2. Countries Implementing the EES (29 Countries)

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland

3. Registration Procedure

3.1 Upon arrival at immigration checkpoints, such as airports, immigration officers will conduct the registration on your behalf, or in certain countries, automated gates (Auto Gates) will be available for self-registration (subject to individual country implementation).

3.2 The system will scan your passport to collect essential information (full name, date of birth, nationality, gender) and capture your facial image and fingerprints for biometric data storage in the EES.

3.3 Following EES data collection, immigration officers will verify the information and complete standard immigration procedures.

Thai travellers planning to visit Europe after October 2025 are advised to prepare in advance.
