May 29, 2023 | 1046 views

The Cabinet has approved the exemption of customs duties for electric vehicle components or electric power-based boats from batteries. This initiative aims to incentivize the production of electric vehicles (BEVs) in Thailand, promote Thailand as an EV Hub in ASEAN, and support the shift in consumer behavior towards sustainable electric transportation.

The items that are exempted from import duty include components for manufacturing or assembling electric vehicles or electric-powered boats from batteries. There are nine items as follows:

  • Battery
  • Traction motor
  • Processor for electric vehicles
  • Battery management system (BMS)
  • Driving control system
  • On-board charger
  • DC/DC converter
  • Inverter, including PCU inverter
  • Reduction gear

In order to qualify for the import duty exemption, the imported items must be brought in between the date of announcement and December 31, 2568. They must be used for the manufacturing or assembly of electric vehicles or electric-powered boats from batteries. Additionally, a certification letter from the automotive institution confirming that the imported items are for the purpose of manufacturing or assembling electric vehicles or electric-powered boats from batteries is required. The imported items must be used for manufacturing or assembly within one year from the import date. If there are any obstacles, it is possible to request an extension of the production period for up to 6 months, with the extension taking effect from the date of the announcement in the Royal Gazette.
