Procedure for Legalization of Translated Documents from Foreign Languages to Thai

Legalization of documents refers to the process in which an authorized officer, acting under the law, signs and stamps the document to certify its legal validity. This applies to both official documents issued by government agencies and legal instruments created by private entities. This method of certification is commonly used in international practices.

The government body responsible for handling these requests is the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Legalization of Documents

  • Governed by the Regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Document Legalization, B.E. 2539 (1996).
  • There are three types of document legalization:
  • Legalization of Translated Documents
  • Legalization of Document Copies
  • Legalization of Signatures
  • Legalization Requirements for Documents Issued in Thailand for Use Abroad. To ensure documents are recognized and legally binding in the intended foreign country, they must be legalized by the following authorities under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
  • Nationality and Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs
  • Authorized government agencies under the Department of Consular Affairs
  • Foreign offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Embassies
  • Consulates-General
  • Thai Trade and Economic Offices
  • Designated Honorary Consulates

Key Conditions for Submission

  • The original foreign-language document or a certified copy, along with an English or Thai translation, must be submitted. The translation must be certified by the embassy or consulate of the relevant country in Thailand.
  • The document must comply with the laws, regulations, or internal practices of the respective country, as applicable.
  • For use abroad, the document must also be certified by an authorized government agency of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including:
  • Embassies
  • Consulates-General
  • Thai Trade and Economic Offices
  • Designated Honorary Consulates

Fees

  • Standard service: 200 THB per legalization stamp
  • Legalization of translated contracts or court documents: 400 THB per page
